On May 4, 2019, Jonas Ndeke graduated from Central Michigan University with a master’s degree in public health. It’s a major accomplishment in what has been a long journey that began in Hawkeye’s Metro Center.
Jonas was a medical doctor in the Democratic Republic of Congo, but when he came to the U.S. he had to start over. He had a long road ahead of him, but with a positive attitude and a goal in mind, he got to work.
Jonas enrolled in English Language Learning classes at the Metro Center. He received the Waggoner ELL Scholarship from the Hawkeye Community College Foundation, and completed the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program through I-BEST (Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training) before moving on to continue his education.
Jonas isn’t done yet. He was accepted into the PhD program in public health at Kent State University. His concentration will be epidemiology.
“I would like to say many thanks to each of you and to the college for having been the starter of my academic adventure in America,” he said. “This goes without saying that I will be always here for any contribution needed to motivate students to invest themselves in learning.”
